An anonymous quote which came back from the SEND capital consultation March 2022 conducted by Pauline Melvin OBE: Service Director- Learning, Inclusion and Skills
“At Redwood Primary school the staff have programmes that are enhanced to support not just the pupils the parents too. Their understanding of disability and the additional needs of children are managed so effectively. I wish I had sent my son to Redwood for his education at the start of reception years. Cannot praise this school enough, and the care and person centred approach towards all children brilliant school”
The 4 areas of SEND are:
1) Cognition and Learning
2) Communication and Interaction
3) Social, Emotional and Mental Health
4) Sensory and/or Physical
When your child is identified as having an additional need in one or more of these areas, their class teacher will support them. They will set targets, plan activities to meet those targets and then review the progress your child has made. You are an important part of this process and will be involved with setting and reviewing the targets. This will happen termly.
If, over time, your child is not progressing as well as we would hope, it may be suitable to involve other agencies who can provide further advice and support. When this is necessary, Mrs Clark will inform you and will work closely with families to get the support that is needed.
Bridge the Gap
Redwood Primary School are an incredible school who reach out to us a external providers to ensure that each child is accessing the most appropriate support from professionals. These learning opportunities with Bridge the Gap have given children experiences and support that they would otherwise not be able to access. At Bridge the Gap we support children with their emotional education and through difficult times and Lucy Clark consistently engages with opportunities and as a school they fund this support when needed – this shows how much they value each individual child within their school family.
Redwood are so good at building relationships and engaging with us as providers that we often offer them opportunities in return:
They themselves have funded parent empowerment sessions and long-term 1:1 support for children who have experienced trauma and they are always open to making any suggestions of reasonable adjustments that could enhance a child’s experience in school. All of this demonstrates how they are committed to helping children to engage fully in school life, participating in activities and making friends. Redwood support holistically and as a relationship focused service, it is a pleasure to work alongside them.

Autism Derby
I have worked with Redwood Primary School for many years, both as an autism outreach worker for the Local Authority and more recently as an independent outreach worker running Autism Derby. During this time, in my experience of working with Redwood Primary School, they have always worked well with myself as an outside agency in a proactive way. I work closely with the SENCO to plan ongoing support for the school. This can be for staff, pupils and for parents too. This work is modified to an individual child’s needs, however opportunities are taken if new approaches are discussed on how to use them across the school for other pupils who would also benefit. Recently we have worked to develop a regular parents meeting which is topic based on Working in the long term, a proactive way benefits all involved. Parents, children and staff are able to build up a relationship and ongoing rapport, which in turn gives parents, school and Autism Derby a trusting relationship.

Local Authorities are required to publish information about services they expect to be available in their area for children and young people from birth to 25 years who have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND); and also services outside of the area which they expect children and young people from their area will use.
This will be known as the ‘Local Offer’.
The Local Offer puts all the information about education, health and care services, leisure activities and support groups in one place. It has two main purposes:

Helping you find services and information for 0 - 25 year olds with special needs
Derby City Council have published their transition guidance document for parents with children, with SEND, going from Year 6 into Year 7. Please take a read as you may find some useful hits and advice to support your child at home. It will also give you an idea of what Redwood and our feeder secondary schools will be doing to support a smooth and successful transition for your child.
